Windows: extensions are not displayed in file names

Risk level

Low. Fixing is optional.

The information is applicable to:

Cause

Windows Explorer uses default settings.

Why it may be dangerous

Malware can disguise its executable files as documents, images, media files, etc. by adding file extensions and changing their icons. For example, when extensions are not displayed, the executable file “image.jpg.exe” will be displayed as “image.jpg”. When you try opening such a file, malware will be launched and criminals will get access to your computer.

After fixing

Extensions of all known files will be displayed. Renaming files will get a bit more complicated.

Rollback options
