A provisioning profile (hereafter profile) is a binary file that is used to distribute iOS applications outside of the Apple Store. The profile contains a certificate, along with information about the device and the operating system it is running. This information is required in order to install applications for business on a device running iOS.

Using software with a digital signature and a specific company profile allows you to be certain that you are installing the precise application indicated in the profile.
